Coming Up in a Switch Stance and Progressive Edging

Coming Up in a Switch Stance

Once you are up and riding comfortably behind the boat, your first challenge should be riding fakie i.e. non-usual foot forward. Most riders find it easier to start with a normal foot before they ride fakie when the board begins to plane off. Once the techique is mastered, you can progress to a more direct approach by switching your leading foot every time you start.

Progressive Edging

As the board begins to plane off, you will find two waves on each side of you. They are the "wakes". Progressive edge or cut refers to a progressive turn towards or away from the wake. Unlike a slalom cut, a progressive edge starts slow and gets faster towards the wake as you hold the edge.

To start a progressive edge, first pull the handle to your leading hip. Depending on the direction you are going, lean back on your heel of your feet if you want to go out whereas lean forward on the pads of your feet near your toes if you want to turn in. To put it all together, use a toe / heel movement to make the board edge in the direction you want.

Remember, put pressure but not your body weight on either your heels or toes. This will cause the board to move in either direction. No matter when you are edging towards or away from the wakes, never try or pull with your back arm. This can cause the board to rotate your rear food forward, most likely resulting in a face plant.
